Classical Chinese Herbal Therapy

"Providing quality herbal, dietary and lifestyle guidance utilizing the best available knowledge and the finest herbs."

Classical Chinese Herbal Medicine (CCHM) is a part of an overall health care system begun by the Chinese over 4000 years ago. But it is not simply ancient methods and ideas. CCHM has been evolving over time to address constantly changing health issues. More and more people are finding that a health care system that combines aspects of both Eastern and Western Medicine is right for them.

CCHM brings you back into balance. Over time your body gets out of balance. Balance is also connected to your basic constitution including:

  • Family Health History
  • Personal Health History
  • Diet and Lifestyle
  • Time of Year

As your body rebalances health problems resolve.

At CCHT we use no endangered or threatened plant or animal products.

Vegetarian and Vegan needs can easily be accommodated.

We offer a complimentary 30 minute consultation for new clients. Find out if CCHT is right for you!

Understanding Chinese terminology

When reading about CCHT, common words written with capital letters tell you that the Chinese interpretation of the word is being used. So stop and think each time you see that capitalized word. It is not necessary to understand in detail what the word means to a Chinese herbalist. But it is helpful to realize that there is often more to the Chinese meaning.

Let’s talk about the spleen (notice this is the western term) for example. The spleen makes one type of white blood cell, removes dead red blood cells and foreign material and stores red blood cells.

The Spleen (this is the Chinese version) assimilates nutrients from food to make Blood, Qi and Fluids (again these are the Chinese terms and therefore different). Thus it is more digestive in function. When a Chinese Herbalist talks about someone having Spleen Qi Xu (yes, I know, too many strange words) (s)he is talking about a person who is fatigued, has a lack of appetite and poor digestion.

But the most important thing to remember is not the exact terminology. It is to Ask Questions if something isn’t clear. It took us years to learn to understand how it works. We don’t expect you to learn it in one visit.

Chinese Herbs for allergies

Many people suffer from allergies. Some spend allergy season in a drowsy haze of antihistamines. Others tough it out, sneezing and wiping their noses for days on end. In China, allergies are thought to be a result of low Wei(or Defensive) Qi, a very different concept than western medicine where allergies are often blamed on a hyper-reactive immune system.

Chinese herbalists tackle allergies from two directions. One is to provide some immediate relief by bolstering the Wei Qi and drying the dampness(clearing the runny nose) and relieving itchy eyes and nose. But the combination of herbs used can be designed to prevent excess drying of the mucous membranes. And, especially if the formula is custom made for the individual, there is no drowsiness or other side effects.

In the longer term, a custom formula is designed that will help build up the Wei Qi and resolve whatever other problems may be contributing to the allergic reaction. As with most Chinese herbal programs, dietary changes are likely to be recommended as well.

Feel free to contact us if you have further questions about Chinese herbal therapy for allergies.
